 ABOUT AUDIO UNITS

What's an Audio Unit?

An Audio Unit is an audio plugin which executes on Mac OS X. VST plugins aren't used to such a high degree on Mac OS X. Instead, Audio Unit plugins are used on Mac OS X with hosts that are Audio Unit compatible. An Audio Unit host is a piece of software which loads and maintains all Audio Units. It usually manages recording, preferences and settings such as latency and sound card settings.

The Audio Unit framework

The Audio Unit framework is part of Apple's CoreAudio. It was developed by Apple for OS X. Manufacturers of plugins may use it and host manufacturers too. However, Apple still maintain the rights to the interface. In addition manufacturers of plugins should make sure that they pass the Audio Unit validation tool, which Apple provides. All MHC plugins pass Apple's Audio Unit validation tool.
